Golden Eagles open three-match homestand Thursday night
The Marquette University women's soccer team (1-5-1, 0-0-0 BIG EAST) wrapped up the road portion of its non-conference schedule with a 5-0 loss at No. 9 Notre Dame (6-1-0, 0-0-0 ACC) on Sunday afternoon.
The win was the sixth-straight victory and shutout for the Fighting Irish, who have outscored opponents 22-0 during that run.
"A very disappointing result," head coach Chris Allen said. "When you are playing one of the top teams in the country at their place, you have to win the intangibles like energy, heart, toughness, belief, effort, passion, etc.
"Unfortunately, we did not display the fighting spirit necessary to pull off an upset and consequently were first-hand witnesses to Notre Dame's athleticism, skill and execution," Allen added. "The hope is that we learn some valuable lessons from this embarrassing loss."
The Golden Eagles trailed 3-0 at the intermission and saw Notre Dame pull ahead 4-0 in the opening minutes of the second stanza. Marquette's offensive attack produced nearly all of its best chances following the intermission, highlighted by a header by Ella McAleenan that hit the crossbar off a corner kick service.
NOTES
The Golden Eagles open a three-match homestand on Thursday, Sept. 12 when the team hosts Mercyhurst at 5 p.m. CT at Valley Fields.
