Golden Eagles look to remain undefeated in BIG EAST play
The Marquette University women's soccer team (6-3-3, 2-0-2 BIG EAST) continues BIG EAST Conference play at UCONN (7-3-2, 3-1-1) on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 5:30 p.m. CT.
Shea Named BIG EAST Standout
Freshman defender Clare Shea was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts against St. John's and DePaul. Shea anchored a back line that limited the two opponents to a combined eight total shots, including just three on goal. She also found the back of the net for the team's third goal in MU's 3-1 win over the Red Storm.
Shea has played every minute this season, totaling 1,080 minutes through the Golden Eagles' 12 matches.
Dorfman Collects BIG EAST Honor
Freshman midfielder Coco Dorfman was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week after helping lead MU to a 2-0 week. Dorfman totaled six points across the two matches, assisting on a pair of goals in the 3-1 win over St. John's before scoring twice, including the game-winner, in Saturday's 4-1 victory versus DePaul.
With her two goals against DePaul, she became the first Golden Eagle to score two or more goals in a match since Tess O'Connell (Sept. 19, 2024 vs. St. Thomas).
Following her standout performances, Dorfman now ranks second on the team with nine points this season.
Leigh Among Scoring Elite
Sophomore forward Jocelyn Leigh continued her strong play, finding the back of the net for the sixth time in nine outings.
The Evanston, Illinois native earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the first time this season (Sept. 30).
Leigh leads the team in goals (6) and ranks among the league's top scorers (T-4th). Since the 2020-21 campaign, only three Marquette players (Leigh, Katrina Wetherell - 5, and Tess O'Connell - 6) have recorded five-or-more goals in a single season.
MU Snaps Win Drought
The Golden Eagles' 3-1 win over the Red Storm was MU's first win in 31 days.
With the Golden Eagles' 3-1 and 4-1 victories over St. John's and DePaul last week, they have won back-to-back BIG EAST games for the first time since the 2022 season.
Attack Comes Alive Again
Scoring seven goals in two games last week is a rare feat, as it has happened only three times since the 2022 season. It previously occurred against Green Bay (Sept. 4) and St. Thomas (Sept. 8) in 2022, when MU recorded 5-0 and 2-1 victories, respectively. Earlier this year, the Golden Eagles tallied seven goals across two games versus Minnesota (Aug. 28) and St. Thomas (Aug. 31), splitting the pair with a 4-3 loss and 4-1 win.
Through matches of Oct. 5, MU ranks third in the BIG EAST in goals per game (2.00).
Defensively, Marquette has allowed just 46 shots on frame, only 38.7 percent of the total attempts (119).
Series With UCONN Dates to 2005
Marquette's all-time series with UConn dates back to 2005. The two programs met twice in 2012 (Oct. 7 and Oct. 28) before the Huskies departed the BIG EAST. The series resumed in 2021 following UConn's return to the conference, marking the first matchup between the teams in nearly nine years.
Since UConn rejoined the conference, the Golden Eagles have yet to record a victory. Marquette's last win over the Huskies came in 2012, a 4-1 home victory, while its most recent win in Storrs dates back to 2010.
