Golden Eagles back in action March 22 vs Villanova
ORLANDO, Florida – The Marquette University men's tennis team concluded play at the USTA National Campus Spring Break Tennis event Thursday afternoon.
Fairfield Matchup
On Wednesday, the Golden Eagles opened play against Fairfield in Orlando, dropping a narrow 4-3 decision.
Fairfield started the match by winning doubles at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, giving them a 1-0 team advantage.
The Stags secured three singles victories at the No. 1, No. 3, and No. 5 positions to clinch the team decision.
Cyrus Ahmad recorded a straight-set victory at No. 2 (7-5, 7-5).
Freshman TJ Ryerson picked up a straight-set win at No. 4 (6-3, 6-3) to give MU its second point of the match.
Evan Glebov notched the third point for the Blue and Gold at the No. 6 position (7-5, 6-7, 7-5).
FDU Matchup
The Golden Eagles began Thursday's doubleheader play against Fairleigh Dickinson, where the squad came up short in a 4-3 effort.
The Knights took the important doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, gaining a 1-0 lead over MU.
Junior Blake Roegner secured a straight-set victory at No. 2 (6-4, 6-4) to give MU its first point of the match.
Freshmen Cyrus Ahmad and Remi St. Laurent recorded three-set victories at the No. 1 and No. 5 spots. Ahmad won 7-5, 6-7, 7-5, while St. Laurent claimed a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 victory.
With just three singles wins, the Golden Eagles fell short, as FDU secured victories at No. 3, No. 4, and No. 6 to clinch the team decision.
Hampton Matchup
MU closed Thursday's doubleheader action and play in Orlando with a 4-1 win over Hampton.
Hampton opened the match by claiming the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3.
Marquette went on to claim four straight wins in singles action.
Freshmen Cyrus Ahmad picked up a win at No. 2 (6-2-6-0) in straight-set fashion.
Remi St. Laurent notched a win at No. 5 in a straight set (6-3, 6-4).
Hugh Perrill picked up a singles win to give MU its third point of the match at No. 6 in two sets (6-0, 6-1).
Kristian Blagoev clinched the MU win with a straight set win at the No. 4 position (6-1, 7-5).
