MILWAUKEE – Senior attackman Bobby O'Grady scored three goals and added five assists in Tuesday afternoon's 19-11 win over Bellarmine at Valley Fields to become the Marquette University men's lacrosse all-time points leader.
"With our strategy, just getting in the box was the biggest thing, we were really confident in our ability to beat them and get good looks when we were settled down," O'Grady said. "You could see in that third quarter we got away from that strategy, but early on we were going right at them. (Saturday's game at) Harvard, we kind of got pounced and we weren't able to come back so we wanted to do that today and it worked out for us."
O'Grady broke Ryan McNamara's previous record of 152 career points with his fourth point and third assist of the game for the Golden Eagles (3-3). That assist came on Carsen Brandt's first score of the day, which gave MU a 6-3 lead at 13:39 of the second quarter.
"I'm super grateful for all the guys on the team, not just this year, but all the years before. Just super excited for everyone that helped me get here. My family is here, which is really cool and all the coaches are awesome. I'm just really grateful for everyone."
The native of Milton, Massachusetts tied a career best with eight points and his five assists is the first time in his career that he's posted more than two in a single contest.
Fellow senior attackman Nolan Rappis also tied his single-game high with five goals to lead all players. He notched a hat trick by the 9:05 mark of the opening quarter as MU jumped out to a 4-0 lead.
"We've learned a lot about ourselves going against some really highly ranked opponents and we built a ton of momentum this week," said first-year head coach Jake Richard. "Our challenge to the team was to carry that into this game and they absolutely did that when we got off to a hot start. I'm really proud of them because that's not an easy thing to do with a short turnaround."
The Knights (3-5) pulled within 4-3 at the end of the first quarter before a 6-1 scoring run gave MU a commanding 10-4 lead late in the second quarter.
Bellarmine's John Alie scored twice to open the third and assisted a Michael Blaymires man-up score to pull BU back within a pair, 11-9, as things got tight. Rappis and Brandt scored twice to close the third and MU lengthened its lead in the final frame.
The Golden Eagles won 21-of-33 faceoffs in the victory, with all three of Adam Slager, Chandler Caster and Ty Ambush seeing time, and picked up 37 ground balls to 22 for the Knights.
