MU secured its first win of the dual season
GALESBURG, IL. - The Marquette University women's tennis team earned a 4-2 victory over Western Illinois on Saturday evening.
The Golden Eagles opened the match by securing the crucial doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots, taking a 1-0 lead.
Elise Barnstedt opened singles play with a 6-4, 7-6 straight-set victory in the first position.
WIU earned a singles win at No. 4 to score its first team point of the match.
Emma Davis claimed the third point for the Golden Eagles after seeing her match go into extended sets. Davis dropped the first set 4-6, but responded in the second taking a 6-2 win to force a third. The MU vet left little room for doubt as she cruised to a 6-3 win to secure the point.
In back-and-forth singles action, WIU earned a team point with a win at No. 3, making the match score 3-2.
Elena Duva sealed the match for Marquette in a 6-0, 6-3 effort.
Coach Brett Barnett on the win:
"Great college tennis match today. I thought Western Illinois played a great match. I am so proud of our effort to gut this one out. We tweaked doubles today and that point was huge. One and three played smart, aggressive tennis and that point set the tone for us. We had to work to get to 4. I am so proud of Elise and Eddie for battling for every point and believing in their tennis at the end. Elena came up huge and got us the clinch.  This team competes so hard and plays with heart for each other. We've got some things to work on but we will get back to work and cannot wait to play at home in front of a nice crowd on Friday!"
