Sheehan's late goal lifts Marquette past Creighton
MILWAUKEE — The Marquette University women's soccer team (5-1-6, 1-0-2 BIG EAST) earned its first conference victory of the season, defeating Creighton (4-5-3, 0-2-2 BIG EAST) 2-1 on Wednesday night at Valley Fields in the Golden Eagles' BIG EAST home opener.
Kaylie Sheehan scored the game-winner in the 82nd minute, finishing a feed from Emily Fix. Megan Murray also scored for Marquette, and Mia Hurd made six saves.
Creighton controlled much of the first half's early action, and Hurd kept the match scoreless by turning aside four shots in under three minutes, from the 29th through the 32nd minute. Marquette broke through about a minute later when Creighton was called for a handball in the box. Murray stepped up to take the penalty kick in the 33rd minute and buried her fourth goal of the season, putting the Golden Eagles ahead 1-0.
Four minutes later Creighton answered, in the 37th minute to make it 1-1, which held through halftime.
Marquette held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks in the first half and kept the pressure on after the break. Kiley McMinn and Ella McAleenan each took shots in the 68th and 69th minutes, respectively, and Hurd made her only second-half save in the 74th minute. The Golden Eagles broke the tie in the 82nd minute, when Fix found Sheehan for her second goal of the season. Marquette held on through the final minutes for the win.
