Second-Half Droughts, Rebounding Haunt Marquette In 70-58 Defeat

MILWAUKEE – Outrebounded by 29-13 in the second half, Marquette saw a four-point halftime lead turn into a 70-58 loss to Seton Hall on Wednesday night at the Al McGuire Center. Outscored by 16 over the final 20 minutes, the Golden Eagles had two six-plus minute scoring droughts resulting in just 18 second-half points.
Skylar Forbes had a team-high 17 points for Marquette. Seton Hall got a game-high 20 points from Zahara Bishop to go with 19 from Mariana Valenzuela.
Seton Hall led for the opening five minutes after scoring the first five of the game. A 7-0 stretch then ensued for Marquette, capped off by Jordan Meulemans sinking a corner 3 that gave the Golden Eagles its first lead of the game at 15-12. MU's lead grew to six at the end of the period, outscoring the Pirates 8-3 during the final two minutes.
Marquette maintained the lead throughout second half despite SHU attempting to chip into its deficit. A pair of triples late in the half from Bridget Utberg helped keep MU in front. A jumper in teh final seconds from Bishop brought the Pirates within four at the half, 40-36.
Out of the break, a corner trey from Forbes, and penetrating layup from Lee Volker on back-to-back possessions, Seton Hall called a timeout trailing 47-40 with 7:15 on the clock. SHU leveled the game up at 49-49 three minutes later following a seven unanswered. The Golden Eagles' drought extended to more than six minutes as the Pirates took a five point-lead into the fourth (54-49).
Marquette had another six-plus minute drought in the final period and was outscored 16-9 during the final 10 minutes.

Marquette remains at home this weekend, playing in front of a sold out Al McGuire Center against No. 1 UConn. Tipoff is set for noon CT and will broadcast on FS1.
