The Golden Eagles captured the doubles point and used a strong singles outing to secure the win
ORLANDO, FLA. - The Marquette University women's tennis team logged a 4-3 win over Fairfield on Wednesday afternoon.
Doubles opened with Luciana Mendoza and Aiyana Abbott taking the first victory 6-2 on court three. It was all Marquette as Elise Barnstedt and Emma Davis took a 7-6 win in the first position.
Singles was a battle between both squads. Fairfield recorded three singles win but it was the Blue and Gold that secured the match.
Barnstedt secured a straight set 6-4, 7-5 win against Mandma in the first position. Abbott also recorded a straight set win as she defeated Loeffler 7-5, 6-3 in the fourth position.
Mendoza saw her match go into extended sets against Liu. Mendoza took the first 6-2, but Liu responded in the second taking the set 6-3. In the superset, Mendoza outlasted Liiu 10-7 to take the win.
Coach Barnett on the win:
"This was a great performance by the team today. We were on the wrong end of two close matches down here and this one could've gotten away from us. We battled and played with so much heart today. Over 100 F on court and we didn't quit. Elise and Emma fought off two match points in doubles and got us the clinch that was crucial. Aiyana did a great job winning in 2 sets and Elise played such a good match to get us to 3. Emma and Elena battled so hard and came up just short. Luciana gives me everything each time on court and she came up with the huge clinch for us today. Proud of the team for this win and we'll keep working hard to finish the season strong."
