Nichols paces defense with career day
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Marquette University men's lacrosse team (4–4, 0–0 BIG EAST) used dominant second and fourth quarters to secure a 15–10 road victory over Bellarmine (4–7, 0–0 ASUN) on Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles were led by Nolan Rappis, who tallied a season-high seven points on four goals and three assists. Carsen Brandt and Matt Caputo each finished with four points, while Andrew Bowman recorded his first hat trick of the season.
Junior defenseman Jackson Nicholas led the way defensively with three caused turnovers and three ground balls, and added his first career goal on a long-range heave. Sophomore Brady Nicholas also contributed two caused turnovers.
After falling behind 3–1 at the end of the opening period, the Golden Eagles flipped the momentum with an explosive seven-goal second quarter, turning a two-goal deficit into an 8–5 halftime lead.
Marquette continued to dictate play coming out of the break, delivering a strong defensive effort in the third quarter. The Golden Eagles held Bellarmine scoreless in the frame while adding two goals of their own to extend the lead to 10–5 heading into the final period.
Bellarmine attempted to rally in the fourth quarter, cutting the deficit to two goals, but Marquette responded with poise down the stretch, scoring three late goals to halt the Knights' momentum and secure the 15–10 victory.
