MILWAUKEE — The Marquette University women's lacrosse (6-4, 0-1 BIG EAST) team held off a furious fourth‑quarter surge from UC Davis (5-5, 0-0 Big 12) to secure a 13-12 win Monday afternoon at Valley Fields Dome to wrap up non-conference action.
Hanna Bodner powered the Golden Eagles with four goals, a career-high 10 draw controls and two ground balls, while Dani Serrano matched her with four goals and added an assist. Tess Osburn scored twice on woman‑up opportunities and added an assist, and Ella Mautz chipped in two goals with one assist, including the game‑winner in the closing minutes. Julia Evens added a goal and assist, while goalkeepers Jillian Howell (five saves) and Mikayla Yang (one save) combined to anchor MU defensively.
Marquette controlled the pace for much of the afternoon, using a dominant draw‑control performance to create extended offensive possessions. The Golden Eagles built early momentum with a 4-0 first‑quarter run, capitalizing on clean clears and forcing six UC Davis turnovers in the opening frame. Bodner scored twice in the first 15 minutes, while Evens and Mautz also found the net as MU outshot the Aggies 13-4.
In the second quarter, Osburn delivered a pair of woman‑up goals following UC Davis green cards, and Serrano and Mautz added even‑strength tallies to send Marquette into halftime with an 8-4 advantage. MU continued its efficient offensive rhythm in the third, stretching the lead to 12-7 behind two more Bodner goals and two from Serrano. The Golden Eagles won six draw controls in the period, repeatedly denying UC Davis the chance to sustain possessions.
UC Davis made its push in the second half, scoring seven straight to erase the deficit and tie the game at 12-12 with 5:15 remaining. Marquette answered quickly as Bodner controlled the ensuing draw and the offense worked the ball to Mautz, who scored the decisive goal with 2:50 left. The Golden Eagles' defense held firm from there, forcing three late turnovers and closing out the victory.
Marquette finished with 37 shots, 24 on goal, and converted both of its woman‑up opportunities. The Golden Eagles also held a 16-11 edge on the draw and went 19‑for‑21 on clears.
