The 2020-21 season marked the fourth for Graham Shaw at Marquette University. Serving under the direction of head coach Louis Bennett, Shaw works with the goalkeepers and directs team camps following two seasons as assistant coach at Maryville University.
Marquette's keepers have thrived under the watch of Shaw. He's developed two All-BIG EASTÂ honorees in his four years in Milwaukee, including 2019 MLS SuperDraft pick Luis Barraza.
Shaw played an essential role in MU's breakout 2020-21 season as his keepers simply refused to concede. The Golden Eagles went 8-3-2 (5-1-1 BIG EAST) and took home the BIG EAST Midwest Division title while allowing just 12 goals on the season.
Starting keeper Chandler Hallwood was sensational, going 7-2-2 on the year and settling single-season school records for fewest goals allowed (8) and goals against average (0.65). His .862 save percentage ranked No. 2 all-time for a season in MU history.
Strong play from Hallwood and fellow keepers Cedrik Stern and Jackson Weyman helped the Golden Eagles to a breakthrough season. As a group, they saved 52 shots with a 0.85 GAA and an .813 save percentage. They allowed just 12 goals in 13 games and compiled six clean sheets.
As a team, MU made the BIG EAST tournament for the third season in a row and the Golden Eagles were selected to their first NCAA tournament since 2013. MU was paired with No. 4 Loyola Marymount, the West Coast Conference champions who came in with an unblemished record. After a 0-0 tie in regulation and two overtimes, the Golden Eagles emerged victoriously in penalty kicks, defeating the Lions, 3-1. Chandler Hallwood's save on WCC Offensive Player of the Year Noel Caliskan proved to be the play of the match in PK's.
MU advanced to their second Sweet 16 in school history and first since 2013 and battled the No. 2 Indiana Hoosiers. An A.J. Franklin goal in the 44th minute put MU up 1-0Â and it kept the lead all the way into the 71st minute. The Hoosiers tallied two goals in the final 19 minutes of game action to take down MU to end the historic season.
Prior to this season, Shaw's coaching proved to be critical in the development of 2019 MLS SuperDraft pick Luis Barraza (New York City FC, 12th overall), who was named the 2018 BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year in addition to being a First Team All-BIG EAST selection. Barraza was one of the best keepers in the country in 2018, finishing the season ranked in the nation's top-10 in save percentage (.830) and saves per game (5.20). He ranked 21st overall in total saves (78) and led the Golden Eagles to the BIG EAST tournament final for the first time since 2013.
Â
In Shaw’s first season as assistant for the Saints in 2015 under current Marquette assistant Sean Hughes, he took the Maryville men’s soccer program to new heights with a single-season record for wins at the Division II level and the most shutouts in a season in program history.
Â
In Shaw’s second season at Maryville he continued the winning trend, again breaking the single-season wins record with the highest finish in program history, as well as reaching the conference tournament for the first time at the Division II level and receiving votes in the NCAA Top-25 poll.
Â
Shaw was responsible for all day-to-day operations, but specialized in working with the goalkeepers at Maryville, guiding them, collectively, to numerous postseason awards such as freshman of the year, two all-conference selections, two defensive player of the week honors and four consecutive clean sheets, all of which were first in the program’s history.
Â
Prior to joining Maryville, Shaw spent four seasons at Soccer Domain Football Club in New Jersey where he served as director of goalkeeping. While in New Jersey, he was responsible for the development and training programs of all academy goalkeepers between the ages of 7-18.
Â
Shaw also held stints at Mossley Hill F.C., Challenger Sports and Liverpool F.C. Academy. As a player, Shaw enjoyed a successful career in his native Liverpool, England, representing Tranmere Rovers F.C. Academy and Liverpool School Boys.
Â
Shaw holds both English FA level 1 and 2 coaching certificates, as well as a UEFA B License and NSCAA Goalkeeping levels 1, 2 and 3 badges.
Â
Shaw completed his degree online in psychology from Southeast Missouri State University in May 2021.
Â
Shaw resides in Milwaukee with his wife, Lauren, and their miniature schnauzer, Rafa.
