Marquette University women's basketball head coach Cara Consuegra retained Michael Garven and named him Director of Program Development on Thursday, July 27, 2024. The 2024-25 season was Garven's first year in the new role and sixth overall, including three years as an undergraduate team manager.
Garven helped guide Marquette to a 21-win season in 2024-25. Marquette finished fourth in the BIG EAST after being picked 10th in the preseason coaches’ poll. The Golden Eagles made it to the second round of the Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament.
The Golden Eagles were consistently top 50 in the nation in field goal percentage defense (38.1 percent) and held opponents to under 45-percent shooting from the field in 28-of-32 games.
Marquette led the BIG EAST in rebounding all season at 37.5 rebounds per game and a +4.8 rebound margin. The Golden Eagles outrebounded their opponent in 20-of-32 games.
Marquette finished third in the BIG EAST in scoring offense (67.1 points per game) and scoring margin (+7.8). Sophomore forward Skylar Forbes earned All-BIG EAST First Team honors while senior guard Lee Volker was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team.
The 2023-24 season marked the second for Michael Garven as a program assistant for the Marquette University women’s basketball team.
Garven assists the head coach with the organization and execution of the program, while also aiding the coaching staff’s player development and recruiting efforts.
His duties will also include working with the team’s director of operations and director of player development with travel, equipment, camps, marketing, communication, social media accounts and student-athlete development. Additionally, he will oversee the manager and practice player program.
Marquette made history during the 2023-24 season with the best start in program history at 12-0. The Golden Eagles were one of 10 teams in the country to go undefeated in nonconference, including winning the Fort Meyers Tip-Off over Thanksgiving weekend. MU earned an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament with 23 wins and finished tied for third at 11-7 in the BIG EAST with St. John's and Villanova.
The Golden Eagles had an outstanding season in 2022-23, a campaign which was topped off by a trip to the NCAA tournament. The season was highlighted by the two highest-ranked wins in program history, as the Golden Eagles took down then No. 3 Texas and then No. 4 UConn during the regular season. The team went 21-11 overall with a 13-7 mark in BIG EAST play, and made it to the BIG EAST Tournament semifinal round for the seventh-straight season.
Garven transitioned to a full-time role with the program after spending three seasons as a team manager and practice player, including two years as head manager.
