CINCINNATI, Ohio - Katherine Ward and Kelly Roethe each collected a goal in the first 15 minutes of action as the Marquette women?s soccer team dropped Cincinnati 2-1 for its fourth consecutive win this afternoon. The Golden Eagles got a strong defensive effort to protect the lead and improve its mark to 6-4-2 and 4-1-1 in Conference USA. Cincinnati falls to 5-6-0, 3-4-0.
?This is a difficult place to play,? Marquette head coach Markus Roeders said. ?So we?re just pumped to come out of here with a win. It was an ugly game, and neither team got into the flow, but it was a defensively sound game for us.?
Melissa Moffatt served as a catalyst for both Marquette goals, which both came off of corner kicks taken by Moffatt. Ward headed in the first Moffatt corner at the 11:20 mark to stake the Golden Eagles to a 1-0. Roethe?s game-winner came in the 15th minute. Moffatt again opened the play with a corner, which was headed into the crossbar by Rhegan Hyypio. Roethe sent the rebound in for her team-leading seventh goal of the season. It also was her second game-winner.
The Bearcats clawed back into the game at the 29:45 mark when Amy Simonson connected after a scramble in front of the net following a UC corner. Marquette keeper Mo Bothwell made a kick save late in the opening frame to allow Marquette to take the one-goal lead into the break.
The junior keeper also looked solid in the second frame, making three saves and directing a strong Golden Eagle defensive effort. Roeders also credited his backline.
?Hyypio, (Kate) Loughran, Diana Detrie and Heather O?Neil all had good games today,? Roeders said. ?They gave us a lift in the second half and, along with Mo, made this win possible.?
Marquette is back in action again at Northwestern on Wed., Oct.6, at 3 p.m. (CT).
