EVANSTON, Ill. - The Marquette women?s soccer team won its fifth consecutive game this afternoon, shutting out Northwestern 2-0 at the Wildcats? Lakeside Field. Freshman Ashley Spakowitz slammed home her second collegiate goal for the game-winner at the 30:48 mark to lift the Golden Eagles overall record 7-4-1. Northwestern fell to 2-9-1 with the loss.
?It was another great defensive effort,? Marquette coach Markus Roeders said. ?We stifled them defensively in the first half, and it was a team defensive effort in front of our backline. Then Mo (Bothwell) picked us up at the end.?
The Golden Eagles controlled play in the opening frame, with Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week leading the way. Though Marquette?s all-time leading scorer didn?t register a shot during the game, Roethe directed a Golden Eagle attack that proved effective in finding space.
?Roethe set the tone early and helped us get into the flow,? Roeders said. ?And the longer the game went, the more comfortable we got.?
Spakowitz netted her second goal in the last week after senior Katie Loughran settled a cleared Marquette corner and sent it back into the box. Spakowitz ran onto the serve, shouldered it past the Wildcat keeper and put the ball into the empty net.
Senior Erin Morgan stayed hot with her fifth goal of the season to conclude the scoring at the 56:38 mark, one-timing a cross from Anna Frisk after Melissa Moffatt picked off a clear in the midfield.
?It wasn?t a perfect game for us,? Roeders said. ?But we were effective against the type of defense they were showing us.?
Marquette continues its six-game road trip this Sun., Oct. 10, with a game against #1 Santa Clara (11-0-0). The Golden Eagles and the Broncos are slated for a 3 p.m. (CT) kick-off at Santa Clara?s Buck Shaw Stadium.
