Women's Tennis Doubles Team Qualifies For Main Draw

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Marquette women?s tennis doubles team of Christine DiMasi and Julia Sapozhnikova qualified today for the Main Draw of the ITA/NCAA Midwest Regionals with a pair of wins at the Racquet Club of Columbus. They join Marquette?s top doubles tandem of Sara Fernandez and Laura Garcia in the Main Draw, which opens tomorrow.
DiMasi and Sapozhnikova opened the day with an 8-4 upset victory over the seeded team of Lynsey Fick and Erika Quebe of Purdue. The Marquette team clinched a spot in the Main Draw with another upset win, this time knocking off fourth-seeded Zahra Ahamed and Karie Schlukebir of Indiana 8-2. DiMasi and Sapozhnikova next face Ohio State?s Kristy Dascoli and Briana Harris, seeded second in the Main Draw, at 8 p.m. on Friday.
Marquette?s other doubles team in the qualifying brackets, freshmen Anna Pavlovic and Alex Stankovic, was eliminated in an 8-2 loss to third-seeded Claudia Castro and Monica Rincon of Ohio State.
The Main Draw for both singles and doubles commences play on Friday. On the singles side, junior Laura Garcia, seeded between #9-16, opens with a match against Indiana State?s Judy LiWampo at 9 a.m. Sapozhnikova will battle one of the eight qualifiers at 10:30 a.m., while fellow senior Sara Fernandez battles Notre Dame?s Kelly Zalinski at 1:30 p.m.
The doubles tandem of Fernandez and Garcia also starts Main Draw competition on Friday, with a 6 p.m. First Round match against a qualifying doubles team.
