Women's Tennis Advances to C-USA Semifinals

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Marquette University women's tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the Conference USA championships this morning with a 5-1 victory over seventh-seeded Southern Miss. The second-seeded Golden Eagles swept the Nos. 1-5 singles matches in straight sets to move on to the semifinals for the fourth time in as many years.
Nationally-ranked Elisa Penalvo (Godella, Valencia, Spain / Juan XXIII) and Ana Fernandez (Betera, Valencia, Spain / San Vicente Ferrer) once again led the way for Marquette, earning 6-1, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-2 victories at the Nos. 1 and 2 singles spots, respectively. Sophomore Laura Garcia (Zargoza, Spain / I. E. S. Goya) blanked USM's Patricia Kundisova, 6-0, 6-0, in the No. 3 singles match. Juniors Julia Sapozhnikova (Belarus, Minsk / College of Olympic Reserves) and Sara Fernandez (Betera, Valencia, Spain / San Vicente Ferrer) also registered singles wins.
Marquette meets Houston tomorrow at 9 a.m. (CST) in a semifinal match-up. The third-seeded Cougars defeated Louisville 5-1 in a quarterfinal match this morning.
