MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Marquette women?s soccer team went the full 120 minutes for the second time in five days and came away with a 0-0 overtime tie with UW-Milwaukee at Uihlein Soccer Park this evening. It is the sixth time in as many seasons that this crosstown battle was decided by a goal or less.
?It was a classic close game with UW-Milwaukee,? Marquette coach Markus Roeders said. ?It wasn?t necessarily our best performance, but it was a good team performance and we?ve been working towards that. We can build off of this.?
The Golden Eagles couldn?t get on the board despite the extended effort of senior Kelly Roethe. The midfielder played the full 120 minutes and created several scoring opportunities, including a near-miss on a four yard header that almost ended things in the second frame of the overtime session. She tallied six shots on the evening.
Also going the distance for the Golden Eagles were juniors Mo Bothwell and Rhegan Hyypio. The duo clamped down on a potent Panther offense, as Marquette allowed only 10 shots and held UWM?s leading scorer Stefani Hosni to two attempts. Bothwell stopped five shots between the pipes to register her first solo shutout of the season.
?I?m proud of the way we played tonight,? Roeders said. ?We played well defensively and created some great chances. We dominated for a spell in the second half, but out-shooting a team doesn?t mean anything if you can?t get the ball into the back of the net. But that?s just how it has been for us during this recent streak of games.?
The Golden Eagles are back in Conference USA action at home on Fri., Sept. 24, when they host Memphis at 7 p.m. (CT) at Valley Fields.
