MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Marquette women?s soccer team controlled play for a majority of the game and came out on top of the Memphis Lady Tigers at Valley Fields this evening. In a sloppy first half, senior Kelly Roethe tallied the game-winner to help the Golden Eagles improve to 3-4-2 and 1-1-1 in Conference USA action. Marquette falls to 3-5, 0-3.
?A sluggish start turned into a pretty good performance for us,? Marquette coach Markus Roeders said. ?It wasn?t our best performance, but we eventually got into a flow. The ?second unit? gave us a spark at the end of both halves.
Marquette got on the board first when Katherin Ward chipped in a Melissa Moffatt cross from four yards out in the game?s seventh minute. However, the Lady Tigers came back at the 11:49 mark when Becca Amrozowicz connected off a volley to knot the game at 1-1. Roethe?s game-winner, her team-leading fifth goal of the season, came at the 14:09 mark off a long through ball from classmate Erin Morgan. Marquette took the 2-1 lead into the intermission.
After a lackluster opening to the second half, the Golden Eagles put the game away at the 52:16 when Lanette Rossini?s cross from the left side was dropped into the net by Memphis keeper Frances Currin. Moffat concluded the game?s scoring with her first goal of the season at the 79:50 mark. Currin played valiantly in net for the Lady Tigers, stopping 15 shots and breaking up several other Marquette scoring chances.
?It?s a big win, because it?s a league win,? Roeders said. ?And that?s what we need right now.?
The Golden Eagles are back in action at the Valley this Sunday, Sept. 26, when they host C-USA rival UAB at 1 p.m. (CT).
