PORTLAND, Ore. -
The Marquette men?s soccer team concluded its first weekend of the 1999 season winless following a 1-0 loss to #11 Washington this afternoon at the Adidas Portland Invitational. Despite the loss, Marquette head coach Steve Adlard said his Golden Eagles have reason to keep their heads up following today?s game.
?The players are down, and they?re angry at themselves,? Adlard said. ?But after Saturday?s game ( a 7-0 loss to Portland), we showed ourselves today that we can play with these teams. We?ve shown the team the top of Division I here this weekend and if they continue to buy into the game plan, we?re going to be a handful for some teams. We?ve got to let it come little-by-little.?
After starting five freshmen in the 7-0 loss to Portland Saturday, Adlard inserted several more-experienced players in the lineup against the Huskies. That veteran lineup and a tighter defensive unit kept the Golden Eagles in the contest early, and allowed the talented Marquette freshmen the opportunity to play in a competitive match with a nationally-ranked team. Washington outshot Marquette 12-6, but each team had only two shots on goal in the midfield-controlled contest.
The game-winner came at 34:55, when Husky striker Wes Hart one-timed a deflected pass from 19 yards out. The sequence started out on a corner, one of nine Washington earned on the afternoon. Junior transfer Greg Guglielmino came on as keeper in the second-half and kept the high-powered Husky offense off the scoreboard.
?They were more experienced, and they had more chances,? Adlard said. ?But by the end, we were playing with them. We worked hard. It was a solid performance against a nationally-ranked team with several very talented players.?
Marquette makes its 1999 debut at Valley Fields this Wed., Sept. 8, when the Golden Eagles host in-state rival UW-Green Bay at 7 p.m. (CT).
