The Marquette women's soccer team fell to 0-2 on the young season with a 2-1 loss to Wisconsin in their 1999 Valley Fields debut in front of a record-crowd of 1,279 this afternoon. The Golden Eagles have not gone without a win in their first two games of the season since their debut year in 1993.
"It's tough right now," Marquette head coach Markus Roeders said. "We haven't had a start like this since I've been here. We don't have great flow right now. We made a couple of mistakes late that cost us. Hopefully, we'll use this as an early character builder."
After a slow, evenly-played first half, the scoreboard still read 0-0 at the half. Wisconsin struck first in the second half, however, when captain Allison Wagner took Kelly Kundert's headed cross and chipped it over the oncoming Mo Bothwell from seven yards out in the game's 60th minute.
The Golden Eagles knotted the game at 1-1 at the 66:01 mark behind the fleet feet of freshman Kate Gordon. The 5-5 striker from Sioux City, Iowa, stretched the Badger defense all game and converted a four yard deflection off a Kelly Roethe cross for the first goal of her collegiate career. It was Roethe's second assist in as many games.
Wisconsin regained the lead for good thanks to Heather Priester and Kelly Conway. A senior midfielder, Priester connected for the game-winning goal on a 22-yard blast from just above the top of the box after the Marquette defense cleared a free kick from the corner. Conway, inserted at goalkeeper at the half, broke up several plays and made three key saves late in the game to preserve the win. Conway's point-blank stop of a Gordon shot late in the contest was the play of the game.
The Golden Eagles are in action at Valley Fields again this coming Friday, Sept. 3, when they host Missouri Valley Conference power Evansville in a 7 p.m. (CST) game.
