Postseason Awards Handed Out To Women's Tennis Team

Milwaukee- The Marquette University women's tennis team announced its postseason team awards at MU's annual All-Sports Banquet this evening. Senior Elisa Penalvo was named to the team's Most Valuable Player. Classmates Sara Fernandez, Julia Sapozhnikova and Christine DiMasi were the recipients of the Most Improved Player, Sportsmanship and Dedication awards respectively.
Penalvo had a distinguished career with the Golden Eagles. She played at the No.1 spot in the rotation for four years and was also named All-Conference USA's first team during her four year career. This season, Penalvo became the first MU tennis player to reach the finals of the Milwaukee Tennis Classic. Penalvo finished the season with an overall 20-7 record. She was 14-4 in dual meets.
Fernandez was third on the Golden Eagles' rotation and compiled an overall 27-6 record. Fernandez was 15-2 in dual meets. She was named to this season's All-Conference USA second team. Fernandez was ranked 77th this season in the March 2 ITA Poll. She teamed with Penalvo and compiled a 13-3 record in doubles competition. They were ranked 45th in the April 12 ITA Poll.
Sapozhnikova compiled an overall 22-9 record in the No.4 spot for Marquette. She was 15-5 in dual matches and teamed with DiMasi, MU's captain, to finish at 11-7 in doubles.
