Milwaukee -- The Marquette men's soccer team ran its record to 4-0 Tuesday evening with a 1-0 win over Northwestern. The game was played at Valley Fields.
Golden Eagle freshman forward Derek Gutierrez (Overland Park, Kansas) accounted for the game's lone goal at the 10:15 mark when his perfectly-aimed header from seven yards out off a corner kick by freshman Tony Walby (Brookfield) beat Wildcat goalkeeper Chris Berlin. The goal was Gutierrez's second of the year.
Marquette enjoyed a 14-5 edge in shot attempts and posted a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks. Marquette freshman goalie Adam Ubert (Hartland, Wis.) finished with two saves en route to his second shutout of the campaign while Berlin registered five stops for Northwestern, now 0-5 on the year.
"Tonight's game was indicative of the history of this series," stated MU head coach Steve Adlard. "We were dominant, had plenty of chances, but no end product to show for it. Perhaps the win at South Florida on Saturday, and playing in the heat and humidity down there, took a bit out of us. One good thing tonight was that we were able to rest several starters longer than usual.
Marquette's next action is on Friday (Sept. 15) when it hosts Cal Poly starting at approximately 8:15 p.m. Preceding the men's game will be a Marquette women's contest against Louisville at Valley Fields beginning at 6:00 p.m.
