Milwaukee -- The Marquette volleyball saw an impressive five-match win streak come to an end Saturday evening as Cincinnati topped the Golden Eagles in five games. The Bearcats captured their ninth straight win with a 28-30, 30-27, 28-30, 30-20, 15-12 decision. UC boosted its overall record to 11-5, 8-1 in the conference. Marquette fell to 10-7 overall, 4-3 in league action.
Senior Vesna Grbavac (Palatine, Ill.) led MU's effort with 21 kills and finished with a 31.5 hitting percentage (21-4--54). Grbavac also tied junior Danielle Hagen (Milwaukee) for the team lead in digs with 14. Senior Mehgan Devine (Harris, Minn.) chalked up 18 kills and recorded a 31.0 attack percentage (18-6--38). Rounding out the Golden Eagles' double-digit kill producers were freshman Jennifer Amobi (Silver Springs, Mary.) and freshman Shannon Devine (Harris, Minn.) with 15 and 10, respectively. Freshman Erin Freer (Stevensville, Mich.) played a strong defensive game with 13 digs.
"It was a well-played match by both teams," said MU Head Coach Laura Farina. "I thought that we blocked well throughout the match. We had opportunities to come away with a win, but just couldn't put the ball away."
Cincinnati posted a slim 79-76 edge in digs while Marquette bettered the Bearcats in total blocks by a 16-13 margin.
Marquette returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 16, when it hosts UW-Green Bay starting at 7:00 p.m. at the MU Gym.
