Marquette Volleyball Tops UW-Green Bay

Milwaukee -- The Marquette volleyball team won its sixth match in the last seven outings this evening, posting a four-game win over UW-Green Bay. The Golden Eagles boosted their overall record to 11-7 following a 25-30, 30-26, 30-25, 30-16 triumph. The loss dropped the Phoenix record to 11-6.
Leading the way for Marquette was senior Mehgan Devine (Harris, Minn.) with 15 kills, 10 digs, three block assists and two service aces. Freshman Jennifer Amobi (Silver Springs, Mary.) recorded a team-best 30.3 attack percentage (14-4--33), and senior Vesna Grbavac (Palatine, Ill.) totaled 15 kills along with a team-leading 17 digs. Junior Danielle Hagen (Milwaukee) and freshman Shannon Devine (Harris, Minn.) chipped in 12 and 10 kills, respectively.
UW-Green Bay was led by sophomores Jessie Theys and Janelle Tomlinson, each of whom finished with 11 kills.
For the match, the Golden Eagles turned in a 21.5 hitting percentage (67-30--172) compared to UW-Green Bay's mark of 16.3 percent (50-25--153). Marquette enjoyed a 72-64 edge in digs while the Phoenix finished with a 7-6 margin in total blocks.
After a slow start in game one where it hit .061 percent, Marquette bounced back to hold UW-Green Bay to an attack percentage of .081 in game two as it evened the match. In the third and fourth games, the Golden Eagles hit a combined 32.9 percent (37-11--79) compared to UW-Green Bay's effort of 15.3 percent (24-12--78).
Marquette resumes C-USA play this Friday and Saturday (Oct. 19-20) when it plays at Tulane and Southern Miss.
