First Day Results from the Wolverine Invitational

After the first round of tennis at the Wolverine Fall Invitational, the Marquette women's tennis team have some things to write home about.
In the blue flight, sophomore Anabelle Espinosa defeated Michigan State's Keri Thompson, 6-2, 3-6,10-8. Sophomore Genevieve Charron beat Michigan's Joanne Musgrove, 7-6, 6-1. However, junior Anna Pavlovic, who went in to the tournament with the best overall record, was defeated in straight sets by Leanne Rutherford of Michigan, 6-3, 6-2.
In the maize flight, sophomore Sommer LaValley defeated Bowling Green's Lisa Maloney (6-4, 6-2) in the first round, before losing to Lisa Thomas of Michigan State in the second round (6-2, 6-2). Sophmore Amanda Devraj lost to Michigan State's Dora Vastag.
In the Wolverine flight, junior Alex Stankovic defeated Karen Gustafson of Michigan State, 7-5, 6-4.
The team of Charron and Pavlovic defeated the DePaul team of Rachel Dybas and Karen Fakluto, 8-1. Espinosa and sophomore Vero Briseno defeated Asa Linden and Dora Vastag of Michigan State, 8-6. Devraj and Stankovic did not fare as well, losing to Alyson Gabel and Jessica Johnson of Bowling Green, 8-1.
Tomorrow's matches start at 9 a.m. with the second round of the doubles tournament.
