Marquette Volleyball Falls Short At Illinois State

Milwaukee -- The Marquette volleyball team returned to action this evening after a nine-day layoff and came out on the short end of a four-game decision at Illinois State University. ISU topped the Golden Eagles before a crowd of 1,249 at Redbird Arena, 31-29, 27-30, 30-22, 30-25. The loss leaves Marquette's record at 5-3 while Illinois State goes to 4-3.
Leading the way for MU was senior outside hitter Vesna Grbavac (Palatine, Ill.) with match-highs in both kills (23) and digs (19). Senior middle Mehgan Devine (Harris, Minn.) totaled 15 successful attacks and five blocks, and freshman Jennifer Amobi (Silver Springs, Mary.) finished with 14 kills and a team-best 35.7 hitting percentage (14-4--28).
For the match, Marquette hit 23 percent (71-28--187) compared to ISU's mark of 30.3 percent (67-14--175). The Golden Eagles finished with an 82-75 edge in digs while Illinois State recorded a 12-7 advantage in total blocks.
Marquette's next match takes place on Saturday (Sept. 22) when it hosts the Blue Demons of DePaul. The match starts at 7:00 p.m. and will be held at the MU Gym.
