Marquette Volleyball Drops C-USA Opener To DePaul

Milwaukee -- The Marquette volleyball team came out on the short end of its Conference USA season opener Saturday evening as DePaul topped the Golden Eagles in an exciting five-game match at the MU Gym. DePaul ran its record to 9-0 (1-0 C-USA) with a 26-30, 32-30, 30-24, 14-30, 15-12 decision. The loss dropped MU's overall slate to 5-4.
Senior Mehgan Devine (Harris, Minn.) paced the Golden Eagles' effort with 18 kills and seven blocks. Senior Vesna Grbavac (Palatine, Ill.) also contributed 18 kills while junior Danielle Hagen (Milwaukee) played a strong match with 15 kills, a match-high 21 digs and three service aces. Rounding out the double-figure attackers for MU was freshman Jennifer Amobi (Silver Springs, Mary.) with 12. Sophomore setter Gemma Greer (Winfield, Ill.) finished the match with 59 assists and 14 digs.
The match featured strong defense from both squads. Marquette finished the match with an edge in attack percentage (.175 vs. .167), digs (76 vs. 74), aces (12 vs. 1) and total team blocks (15 vs. 12), but in the decisive game 5, Marquette hit just .075.
DePaul senior setter Kara Jakusz became C-USA's all-time leader in assists during the contest,, surpassing Liz Eagsti's total 5,180 during her Marquette career. Jakusz doled out 49 assists and now has 5,220 to her credit.
Next up for Marquette is a Tuesday match (Sept. 25) at UW-Milwaukee starting at 7:00 p.m.
