Milwaukee -- The Marquette volleyball team dropped its third consecutive match on Tuesday, dropping a four-game decision to cross town rival UW-Milwaukee. The Panthers topped the Golden Eagles at the Klotsche Center, 27-30, 30-18, 30-20, 30-20. The setback evened MU's record at 5-5 while UWM raised its overall slate to 5-5.
In the first game of the match, Marquette faced a 13-8 deficit before bouncing back to claim a 16-15 lead. After falling behind by a 24-21 margin, MU again clawed back to take a 25-24 edge, a result from a solo block by freshman Jennifer Amobi (Silver Springs, Mary.) . After the Panthers knotted the game at 25-25, the Golden Eagles took the lead for good with junior Danielle Hagen's third attack in the game.
After hitting a respectable 28.6 percent (18-4--49), and holding UWM to 15.1 percent (17-9--53) in the first game, Marquette could not sustain the momentum and recorded just an 11.5 attack percentage (31-17--121) over the remaining three games compared to UW-Milwaukee's effort of 30.3 percent (54-14--132). For the match, the Panthers out hit Marquette (25.9% vs. 16.5%), recorded more digs (82-75) and dished out more service aces (12-3).
Senior Mehgan Devine (Harris, Minn.) hit a team-high 28.1 percent (10-1--32) while senior Vesna Grbavac (Palatine, Ill.) finished with a team-best 12 kills along with 17 digs, tying her with freshman Erin Freer (Stevensville, Mich.) for team high in that category. Amobi rounded out MU's double-digit attack performers with 10 and also registered 10 digs.
Marquette returns to C-USA action on Friday (Sept. 28) when it hosts South Florida. The match will be held at the MU Gym and start at 7:00 p.m.
