Women Have Tough Time in Third Place Match

The Marquette women's tennis team had a rough time of it at the Minnesota Court Classic. Losing 7-0 Friday against Duke, the women hoped for better things Saturday as they took on Minnesota.
The singles results resembled Friday's matches. In the No. 1 spot, sophomore Gen Charron (Quebec, Canada) lost to Michaela Havelkova 6-7 (8), 6-4, 6-4. At No. 2, Jen Howard defeated sophomore Annabelle Espinosa (Panama City, Panama), 6-4, 6-4. Andrea Rose defeated sophomore Vero Bresino in the No. 3 position, 6-3, 7-6 (4). Junior Anna Pavlovic (Loyola Academy, Chicago, Ill.) won out over Brandi Watts, 7-5, 6-2 in the No. 4 spot. At No. 5, Kelly Perry won over sophomore Sommer LaValley (Notre Dame Academy, Green Bay, Wis.), 6-1, 6-2. Finally, in the No. 6 spot, Kandis Batiste defeated junior Alexandra Stankovic, 7-5, 6-3.
In the doubles matches, Marquette fared better, winning two of the three. The duo of Charron and Briseno beat Havelkova and Rose, 8-2. Pavlovic and Espinosa defeated Perry and Howard, 8-3. In the only match Minnesota won, Watts and Batiste beat the tandem of Stankovic and La Valley, 8-3.
