MILWAUKEE - It took just 17 seconds for Marquette to take a lead against TCU. The Golden Eagles (3-5, 2-2 C-USA) used that early advantage to have an offensive explosion over the Horned Frogs (2-9, 1-3 C-USA) in a 4-1 win.
Junior midfielder Matt Darby (Leawood, Kan.) raced down the middle of the field after kickoff with junior forward Derek Gutierrez (Overland Park, Kan.). Gutierrez took the ball down the middle and tried to maneuver past TCU goal keeper Michael LaHoud, but shot off his leg. Darby followed up behind Gutierrez for the early lead.
"It's nice a nice thing to do," head coach Steve Adlard said of the early goal. "That was almost as quick as it can be and it was a great momentum builder. We have scored early this season and not pushed it to two or three. So it was nice to be able to score more."
MU scored twice more in the first half. The second MU goal came from sophomore Chris Lee (Lenexa, Kan.). He placed his head on a free kick from junior midfielder Tony Walby (Brookfield, Wis.) to flick it over LaHoud's head.
"It was nice to see Lee score and move freely around the field than he was at any other time during the season," Adlard said. "He scored basically because of his speed. That sends a message that our opponents are going to have to defend him more honestly."
TCU got its mark in the 33rd minute. Andrew Porteous scored his second goal of the season on a shot from eight yards out. TCU midfielder Paul Davalos played a ball in to the short corner to the left of the MU goal and placed a centering pass to the near post for Porteous, who then placed it under MU junior keeper Adam Ubert (Hartland, Wis.) to cut MU's lead to 2-1.
"They gave us as much pressure at the back of our defense as anyone we have seen this season," Adlard continued. "It proved to be good. With the constant threat, we kept our focus. Our defending was more efficient."
The Golden Eagles third goal of the first half came off a diving header from senior midfielder Mike Robards (Leawood, Kan.). Robards, scoring his third of the season, dove to meet a ball placed across the box from the foot of Darby, who recorded the assist.
MU scored in the 79th minute in transition. Senior forward Eric Marshall (Waukesha, Wis.) scored the goal that put TCU away for good.
The Golden Eagles return to action after a short time off. MU plays intrastate rival Wis.-Green Bay in Green Bay on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m.
