MILWAUKEE - Despite outshooting Oakland, 15-3, and owning a 6-2 shots on goal advantage, Marquette (1-2) fell to the Golden Grizzlies (1-2-1), 1-0. The Golden Eagles had numerous efforts, but couldn't finish any scoring chances.
Oakland scored the match's only goal in the 22nd minute. Mike Matalavy blasted a shot from 12 yards that was saved by MU junior goalkeeper Adam Ubert (Hartland, Wis.). His rebound, however, went to the right foot of midfielder Philip Braathen who banged it past Ubert from eight yards away.
Marquette had several second half opportunities, owning a 9-1 shot advantage. On six corner kicks, Marquette had a couple of significant goal scoring chances with crosses intended for the heads of junior forward Derek Gutierrez (Overland Park, Kan.) and senior defender Tom Nolan (Palatine, Ill.). However, either the efforts were off target or punched away by Oakland goalkeeper Jeff Weise. Weise made six saves in the match.
"It's amazing. You get X number of loose balls in the area and 100 percent of X fall to them," head coach Steve Adlard said. "We're not fighting as hard as they are for the loose balls right now."
Marquette's best opportunity came when Gutierrez took a shot from six yards out that was saved and punched out by Weise with 24 minutes left in the match.
"The our style of play, with the flow, effort and skill that we demonstrated is exceptional," Adlard said. "We have to go back and see if we can create the mentality to finish chances. It's a mentality. It's about attitude."
The Golden Eagles return to action a week from today at Wright State on Sept. 18. Match time is 7 p.m. EDT.
