DAYTON, Ohio -- Marquette got a goal and an assist each from senior midfielder Mike Robards (Leawood, Kan.) and Derek Gutierrez (Overland Park, Kan.) to defeat Wright State, 4-2. Marquette evens its record at 2-2. Wright State falls to 2-4-1.
Robards got the Golden Eagles on the board early in the match with a long shot after receiving a pass from Gutierrez in the eighth minute.
"Mike Robards had a good match tonight," head coach Steve Adlard said. "It was nice to see him come out and play the way he did with the goal and the assist."
The Raiders retalliated 11 minutes later. WSU's leading scorer, forward Ricky Strong, fed an open Brent Stoller in transition to tie the match.
Gutierrez was able to secure a turnover and score unassisted just before halftime to give MU a 2-1 lead at the break.
Strong evened the match in the 60th minute adding a goal to his earlier assist.
"We've still got a lot of work to do," Adlard said. "Both goals that we allowed can be fixed. We haven't let a goal in from free play all year until we allowed both tonight."
From that point on, the match was all Marquette. MU scored in the 72nd minute as senior forward Eric Marshall scored off an assist from junior midfielder Zach McCallum (Madison, Wis.). Just over a minute later, sophomore midfielder Danny Mullin scored the final tally of the match on a Robards assist.
""Maybe the offense got something going tonight with four goals. It's good to see them step up and finish. We could have had even more with 23 shots. Marshall had a bunny with 10 mintues to go but he pushed it wide. We had chances but we just missed here and we just missed there."
Marquette dominated the match, outshooting the Raiders 23-9. However the match was dominated by several stoppages of play. Adlard stated that because of all the whistles, no flow was established in the match.
"They played the counter attack and their equalizer came on such a play," Adlard said. "Tonight's match was disjointed. We could never establish a flow."
Marquette returns to action with a Conference USA test on Sunday, Sept. 22 at Cincinnati at 1 p.m. EDT.
