SEATTLE, Wash. -- Marquette (2-5) was upended by Portland in the final game of the Nike Husky Classic in Seattle.
Portland scored in the first half in the 40th minute. Midfielder Eric Cronkite scored with assists from Sheldin Maistry and Sean Babcock.
Marquette had its chances in the first half and Portland goalkeeper Curtis Spiteri made a key save to keep the Golden Eagles scoreless.
"We had some tremendous opportunites, but we failed to convert," head coach Steve Adlard said. The Pilots scored twice in the second half. Paul Robinson scored in the 62nd minute on an assist from Nate Jaqua. Jaqua added a goal in the 76th minute from Patrick Mooney and Cronkite.
"We know we can play, we just have to learn to overcome some of the mental lapses that lead to goals," Adlard said. "We played really well, but we let in a soft goal early. We can't have those kind of lapses if we expect to win."
Marquette was without the services of Chris Lee for most of the contest. Theran Motl suffered a hip injury near the half, keeping him out of the remainder of the game and Bryan Godfrey separated a shoulder late.
Marquette next plays TCU on Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. at Valley Fields.
