CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers men's soccer team blanked Conference USA foe Marquette, 2-0, in their final home game of the season. With the win, the 49ers improve to 5-9-2 overall and 4-3-1 in Conference USA. While Marquette falls to 9-8-1 overall and 4-3-1 in Conference USA.
Senior goalkeeper Lucas Mackanos posted his second shutout of the season and his 13th of his career. He made one save as Marquette was able to manage one shot on goal. The Golden Eagles had seven chances overall. Marquette keeper Adam Ubert made five saves on the night.
Charlotte scored the match's first goal when Sean Zubick ran under a Michael Rose cross that was headed toward the left goal post in the 21st minute. Zubick then connected on a scoring shot into the lower left corner of the goal.
"We did not play as well as we have in recent games," head coach Steve Adlard said. "I think they played decent. You have to give the other team credit for what they did. They were difficult to play against, countered well and created chances for themselves."
Junior forward Chris Lee was heavily marked and was only able to manage one shot. The Golden Eagles were able to create four chances in the second half. One nearly tied the match, but a shot from two yards away went wide.
"We did miss on some breakaways, due to the immense pressure on Chris Lee," Adlard added. "They surrounded him all night and the goalie was able to break up several opportunities."
The 49ers added a cosmetic goal late. Floyd Franks insurance goal came in the 89th minute when he took an Evan Harding pass and beat Ubert with a shot into the lower left corner of the goal.
The Golden Eagles wrap up the regular season at home on Saturday, November 8 against Cincinnati at 1 p.m. at Valley Fields.
