Men's Soccer Drops 4-1 Decision to Oakland

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Marquette men's soccer team ended its two-match scoring drought, but continued to give up goals as it lost to Oakland, 4-1. Marquette falls to 1-3, while Oakland improves to 2-0-1.
Marquette continue to maintain scoring opportunities. The Golden Eagles were outshot only by one, 18-17, but Oakland converted on four of its eight shots on goal, while MU didn't convert on any of its 11 shots on goal.
Four different Golden Grizzlies players scored. OU's first three strikes came within eight minutes. Ryan Rzepka headded a ball from six yards ot in the 32nd minute to go up 1-0. Chris Edwards blasted a shot from six yards to the far posst in the 37th minute. In the 39th minute, Brandon Felker launched an 18 yard shot to the far post for OU's 3-0 lead. Shahar Ktovim had assists on Edwards' and Felker's goal. Felker also assisted on Edwards' goal.
"It's painful to have to learn like this," head coach Steve Adlard said. "It's frustrating, but we're all in it together. We didn't solve our problems today. Even our veteran players have to learn new roles. Patience is key, but it's really frustrating."
Philip Braathen, who assisted on Rzepka's goal, scored in the 53rd minute for OU's final tally. He received an assist from OU goalkeeper Jeff Wiese, who had eight saves on the day.
Freshman midfielder Sean Flynn had MU's only goal. He struck in the 65th minute, hitting the crossbar with his attempt which crossed the goal line. Junior midfielder Chris Lee picked up the assist on the goal.
"It's was great to get the goal," Adlard said. "We started out the second half well, but we're just not quite there yet. That's the way its going to be for a bit."
Marquette returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 10 as it hosts DePaul at Valley Fields at 7 p.m.
