The Marquette women?s tennis team (3-4) dropped their fourth match of the year to an ITA ranked opponent, Saturday night, as the visiting 66th-ranked Wisconsin (5-4) squad took the doubles point, and then posted a 4-2 advantage in singles to take the match.
The Golden Eagles made quite a challenge, in an effort to keep their home record unblemished. After Wisconsin took the No. 1 doubles match at 8-2, the Nos. 2 and 3 matches became hotly-contested, with Wisconsin edging Marquette at the wire in both. In the #2 match, Annabelle Espinosa and Eva Trujillo Herrera kept the pressure on, but were unable to overtake Wisconsin?s tandem of Teresa Gonzaga and Shana McElroy, falling 8-6. The No. 3 match saw the freshman duo of Callan Smith and Dominka Dabrowski both Kaylan Caiati and Lexi Golden to the limit, before faltering 10-8 in the match-deciding tiebreak.
In the singles competition, Genevieve Charron and Francina Bonnelly each picked up points for Marquette, winning their respective matches in supersets. The wins at nos. 2 and 6, respectively were the only Golden Eagle points on the day.
Marquette returns to action Saturday, February 21, when the Golden Eagles host Western Michigan at 9 a.m.
