The Marquette women's tennis team (3-5) dropped its third-straight contest, to visiting Western Michigan (4-3) on Saturday.
A shake-up in the doubles line-up showed potential for future success. Freshman Dominika Dabrowski got her first action at the No. 1 doubles spot, with veteran Veronica Garcia Briseno. The combo played well, but faltered late, losing a 9-7 decision. Genevieve Charron, dropping to the No. 2 doubles spot teamed up with senior classmate Eva Trujillo Herrera, to win their match 8-6. Combined with Annabelle Espinosa and Callan Smith's loss at No. 3 doubles, the visting Broncos took the doubles' point.
On the singles side, Garcia Briseno struggled with Western Michigan's top starter Frederika Girsang (ranked 87th in the latest ITA rankings), losing 6-2 and 6-2. The rest of the top half of the Golden Eagle line up fell as well.
However, senior leadership came through on the bottom half of the card, as Trujillo Herrera, playing in her first singles match of the season knocked off Valeria Stoilova at No. 4, 6-3, 7-6. Classmate Espinosa was also victorious, over Western Michigan's Malena Remynse at No. 5, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.
The Golden Eagles are back in action Saturday, when they host No. 36 Indiana at 10:30 a.m.
