Golfers Open Up Play at C-USA Championship

Gray leads team with one-over, 73, through 18 holes
GULFPORT, Miss. ? In the opening round of the Conference USA Championship, the Marquette golf team fired a collective 306. That score places the Golden Eagles in 10th place at 18 over par. TCU leads the tournament, shooting 10-under, 278.
Freshman Ted Gray carded Marquette's best first round, with a one-over, 73, through the first 18 holes. He was one-under through the front nin, pacing himself to a solid first round. Gray was consistent, shooting par on 13 of the 18 holes.
He is seven shots behind East Carolina's Robin Smith, who shot a six-under, 66, to lead the 70-player field. Six golfers shot 69 or better in the first round.
Following Gray in the Marquette standings is junior Steve Sass, who carded a four-over, 76, and is in 34th place. Sophomore Michael Bielawski is in 41st place, recording a five-over 77. Junior Kyle Murphy shot 80, tying for 58th place. Rounding out the Marquette field, junior Joe Weber shot an 81 and is in 64th place.
The tournament continues on Tuesday, April 19 with the second round. Final round play is Wednesday, April 20.
