Golden Eagles Compete at Minnesota Classic

The Marquette men's and women's indoor track & field team competed at the Jack Johnson Minnesota Classic on Saturday, Jan. 21 at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse.
On the men's side, Brent Des Roches placed second overall in the 3,000m run, clocking a time of 8:11.32 - besting the previous meet record of 8:13.05. It was also the second-best time in school history and just five seconds off the provisional qualifying standard for the NCAA Championship. Teammates David Henderson and Jeremy Williams placed fifth (8:30.55) and eighth (8:37.02), respectively. Henderson's time also qualified him for the BIG EAST Championship, held on Feb. 18-19 at the University of Akron's Athletic Fieldhouse.
Jed Burey placed eighth in the 600m run (1:21.61), while Kyle Saginus was ninth in the mile (4:18.95) - a BIG EAST championship qualifer. Tom Cassady finished seventh in the 400m (51.03)
Mike Bodecker was eighth in the weight throw, with a heave of 49 feet 7 1/4 inches (15.12m). Ray Bratchett finished fifth in the high jump with a leap of 6-6 3/4 (2.00m).
Other Marquette men's finishers: 600m: 12. Loren Wagner, 1:23.79; 800m: 15. Ben Miles, 2:03.66; mile: 23. Josh Pinter, 4:28.55; 60m hurdles: 5. (ht. 2) Matt Piekarski, 8.94; 4x400m relay: 5. 3:23.09; shot put: (flight 1) 2. Jeff Kluge, 45-4 1/2 (13/83m), 6 Eric Matuszewski 41-4 1/2 (12.61m); pole vault: 13. Nick Van Deraa 13-0 3/4 (3.98m)
On the women's side, Michaela Courtney led a full Marquette contingency in the mile, finishing third in a time of 4:49.30, qualifying her for the BIG EAST championship in that event. Cassie Peller also finished third in the 3,000m run, crossing the line in 10:00.31, followed closely by teammate Heidi Lindeman in fourth (10:02.40). Both performances were BIG EASt qualifiers.
The Golden Eagles also got a pair of fourth place finishes from Kristina Malin in the 600m (1:35.25) and Kaitlyn Chambers in the 800m (2:19.02). Malin's time set a new Marquette school record.
Emily Leklem finished third in the shot put, with a toss of 45- 6/14 (13.87m) while Jessi Ehlen was fifth in the weight throw with a heave of 54-2 (16.51m). Both athletes improved on their season's best performances, improving their seed in the BIG EAST championship. Kristin Stoniecki was seventh in the pole vault (10-8 3/4, 3.27m).

"Despite it being our first race since coming back after break, I thought we looked pretty good this afternoon. "said head coach Dave Uhrich. "It's tough, sometimes, getting back into the swing of things with school and then workouts on the track. Overall it was a good day."
The Golden Eagles return to action on on Friday, Jan. 27 at the Notre Dame Invitational, held in South Bend, Ind.
