MILWAUKEE - With injury and illness hampering the Marquette women's tennis team, 23rd ranked Michigan defeated the Golden Eagles, 7-0, at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium. Marquette will look to rebound tomorrow when it hosts in-state foe Wis.-Green Bay at the Helfaer at 2 p.m.
"There is a reason Michigan is ranked 23rd in the nation," said head coach Jody Bronson. "They treated us like we were a top-10 team and came out and played every single point like it was the most important point of the match. We need to play like that. We need to realize that every point should be played like that because that is what will change an outcome of a match."
The Wolverines got off to a hot start wining both no. 1 and no. 2 doubles to clinch the doubles point. The Michigan doubles tandems of Kara Delicata and Debra Streifler downed sophomore Maria Calbeto and freshman Lauren Little, 8-2, at the first doubles position, while Allie Shafner and Chisako Sugiyama topped juniors Francina Bonnelly and Dominkia Dabrowski at the no. 2 spot. No. 3 doubles was not played due to injury and illness in the Marquette lineup.
Michigan used its momentum from winning the doubles point and kept its solid play going in singles competition. No. 71 Delicata got the first singles win for the Wolverines and defeated Calbeto at no. 1 singles in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
Michigan's Streifler followed that up with a win over Dabrowski at no. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-2. Little fell to Nina Yaftali in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, and sophomore Erin Watkins was defeated, 6-1, 6-0, by Elizabeth Exon at the third singles spot.
Bonnelly kept it close with her Michigan counterpart jumping out to an early lead in the second set, but ended up dropping a 6-4, 6-3 decision to Shafner at no. 4 singles leaving Michigan to earn its first sweep of the season.
"Fran was a great competitor today," added Bronson. "She played well against her opponent. Hopefully tomorrow we can show what we are learning against Green Bay. We need to continue to compete and come out ready to play tomorrow."
