MILWAUKEE - The Marquette men's soccer team took a 2-0 lead by the 48th minute, but Wis.-Milwaukee rallied for a 3-2 victory at Engelmann Field.
Marquette took the 2-0 lead early in the second half when junior Mike Carlson scored his first career goal. Carlson chipped a 25-yard shot into the far post off a short corner from senior Rob Walton. MU's goal came seven minutes after sophomore Andy Gill recorded a first half goal.
Starting in the 54th minute, it was the Panthers that would return the quick scoring favor. Craig Mallace made it 2-1 on a 30-yard bender into the upper on an assist to Dale Weiller. Just 2:23 later, Steve Bode tied the match on a six yard shot off a free kick by Weieler who recorded his second assist of the match. It was the third straight match that Marquette had surrendered consecutive goals in under four minutes.
UWM took the lead on a corner kick from Mallace to Andre François. Mallace hit the ball to the low near post that François dove and headed the ball past Marquette keeper Marc Dettman, who came in at halftime.
"UWM is a difficult team to contain," head coach Louis Bennett said. "There were some mental errors out there at crucial times. Set pieces should be a controllable thing and we were unable to control them tonight. If you have one lapse of concentration against a good team and you are going to pay."
Marquette had a shot to tie in the 86th minute, but a running shot from the penalty spot by Dan Addis went high. Marquette also had a free kick opportunity in the final minutes at the corner of the box, but couldn't convert.
UWM created several first half chances off corner kicks, but Marquette weathered those chances and scored on one of their own corners in the 40th minute for the 1-0 lead. Senior Nathan Sabich sent a corner to the front of the net that sophomore Andy Gill headed down from five yards out for his first career goal.
UWM had 13 first half shots and had eight corners in the first half forcing freshman goalkeeper Matt Pyzdrowski to make six saves. For the match, UWM had 25 shots to MU's seven and owned a 13-4 advantage in corner kicks.
"Part of our game plan is to play low pressure and we like to counter and fast break," Carlson said. "A team can have the ball as much as they want, but if we keep them out of the net, that's what's important."
UW-Milwaukee had the first opportunity of the match in the second minute off a set piece. Steve Sperl and Dale Weiler each had a stab at a ball that came through the box, but the ball went harmlessly out of play before either could get a foot on it.
The Panthers hit two posts in the first half. Mallace hit the crossbar in the fourth minute. The rebound was shot in by Billy Moore, but Pyzdrowski made the save. UWM hit the crossbar in the 11th minute on a shot by Weiler after a corner kick broke down and he found the rebound.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Friday, September 15 taking on Cincinnati at 7 p.m. EST in Cincinnati, Ohio.
