LOVELAND, Ohio - The Marquette golfers are the team to beat at the Xavier Invitational as the Golden Eagles stand in first place after 36 holes. Marquette is two strokes ahead of St. Mary's with a combined score of 561.
Senior Ted Gray paced Marquette Monday with a seven under par, 137, and is in a two-way tie for fifth place with Bowling Green's Jace Walker.
Marquette had a stellar second round play shooting a 22-under, 266 after going seven-over, 295 for the first 18 holes.
Behind Gray, junior Dustin Schwab is in a three-way tie for seventh place at six-under 144, while classmate Mike Van Sickle stands tied for 30th at an even par 144.
After shooting a 76 in the first round, Van Sickle trimmed eight strokes off his second 18 holes (68) to end the day even.
Rounding out the scoring for MU through two rounds was freshman Kelly Kretz who sits tied for 21st at two under, 142. He also shaved eight strokes off his first round total (75) and shot a five-under, 67 in the second round.
The third and final round at the Oasis Golf Club will begin at 7 a.m. CT on Tuesday.
