LOVELAND, Ohio - The Marquette golf team held on to its lead through the third and final round of play Tuesday at the Oasis Golf Club in Loveland, Ohio and captured the team title at the Xavier Invitational. The Golden Eagles finished with a team total of 841 and shot an eight under, 280 for the final 18 holes, two strokes ahead of runners up Western Carolina and Campbell (843).
Western Kentucky's Brent Long took home the individual title with a 13 under, 203, over three rounds of play.
Junior Dustin Schwab was MU's highest finisher in ninth place shooting a 207 for the 54-hole tournament. Schwab hit a three under, 69 in the third round.
Senior Ted Gray was the Golden Eagles' next best finisher in a tied for 12th. Gray shot an even 72 for the final 18 holes and registered a score of 209 (seven under) for the tournament. Gray slipped in the standings from fifth after finishing the first two rounds seven under, 137.
Fellow junior Mike Van Sickle registered Marquette's best third round total with a five under, 67, and finished tied for 14th (209). He vaulted up the standings after finishing the first 36 holes tied for 30th place.
Freshman Kelly Kretz rounded out the MU scoring with a seven-over, 223, finishing tied for 67th place.
The Golden Eagles will return to action on Sunday, Oct. 7, at the Windon Memorial Classic in Glencoe, Ill.
