Wisconsin Fends Off Marquette, 4-3

MADISON - The Marquette women's tennis team was unable to overcome a 3-1 early deficit Wednesday night and dropped another close match to Wisconsin, 4-3, at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium. The Golden Eagles fall to 1-8 on the season, while Wisconsin improves to 3-5 overall. Junior Maria Calbeto, and Erin Watkins, along with sophomore Robin Metzler all scored wins for the visiting Golden Eagles.
Marquette fought hard for the doubles point, but came up short in the point-clincher match at no. 2 doubles. After the no. 1 doubles tandem of sophomore Lauren Little and Watkins went down, 8-1, senior Francina Bonnelly and junior Shannon Brown dominated their Wisconsin counterpart at no. 3 doubles, 8-1, to tie things up in doubles competition. UW's combo of Nicole Beck and Chelsea Nusslock pulled out an 8-6 decision over freshman Kylie Moore and Calbeto at the second doubles position to secure the doubles point and take an early 1-0 lead.
In singles play, the Badgers' Kaylan Caiati cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 no. 1 singles win over Little to put UW up, 2-0. However, Metzler made it 2-1 with 6-4, 6-1 victory over Kim Roberts at no. 5 singles. From there, the Badgers collected back-to-back wins to go ahead 4-1 and clinch the team win. Liz Carpenter won a three-set thriller over freshman Kylie Moore at no. 2 singles, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, and Beck fended off Brown in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, at no. 6 singles.
Despite the match already being decided, the Golden Eagles continued to put forth effort as Calbeto rallied back from a first set loss to defeat Erin Jobe, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 at no. 4 singles and Watkins held on to a 7-6, 7-6 straight set win over Nusslock at no. 3 singles.
The Golden Eagles will hit the road this weekend to New Mexico where they will take on Northern Arizona on Saturday, Feb. 17, at 2 p.m. CT and no. 38 New Mexico on Sunday, Feb. 18, at 10 a.m. CT.
