Women Fourth, Men Sixth at SIU Spring Classic

CARBONDALE, ILL. - The Marquette men's and women's track & field teams began the 2007 outdoor season, Saturday, at the SIU Spring Classic hosted by Southern Illinois. The women finished in fourth place out of 13 teams at the meet with 95.5 points, while the men finished sixth out of 13 teams with 57.5 points. Senior Michaela Courtney highlighted the meet for the Golden Eagles with a first place finish in the 5,000m in a time of 16:52.56, qualifying for the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships.
"The meet went really well today," said head coach Dave Uhrich. "We had beautiful weather, in the mid-70's and partly sunny. Overall, it was a great way to start the outdoor season."
Indiana State won the meet on the women's side, scoring 122 points. It also won the meet on the men's side, scoring 142.
Along with Courtney, freshman Anna Weber also had a good run in the 5,000m, finishing fourth with a time of 17:58.60.
Junior Kristen Stoniecki grabbed the pole vault title en route to qualifying for the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships, clearing a height of 11-5.75. Joining her in the conference meet will be sophomore Carrie Schmid who also cleared 11-5.75 to finish third.
In the 1,500m, freshman Jayne Grebinski finished second, qualifying for the conference meet in a time of 4:33.84.
In the triple jump, sophomore Sharon Fritz triple-jumped her way to the outdoor championships with a leap of 37-4.5, finishing fifth.
Sophomore Audra Ketelsen (124-2) and freshman Kelly Magennis (118) finished second and fourth in the javelin, both qualifying for the BIG EAST meet.
Ketelsen also qualified for the outdoor championships in the discus after a toss of 144-10. She finished fourth.
Erynn James had a great start to the outdoor portion of her freshman career at Marquette with a fifth place finish in the high jump, clearing 5-3.
Senior Jenna Mahaffey qualified for the outdoor championships with a toss of 156-0 in the hammer throw, finishing seventh.
"Our men's middle distance was amazing today," added Uhrich. "We swept the 1,500m, 3,000m steeplechase and 5,000m, which was amazing. We would have liked to have placed higher as a team, but we still qualified many people for the BIG EAST meet."
Sophomore Scott Mueller (14:47.63) , senior Brent Des Roches (14:57.13) and junior Kyle Saginus (15:01.87) finished 1-2-3 in the 5,000m. Mueller qualified for the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships.
In the 1,500m, senior Tommy Schmitz captured first in a time of 3:52.51.
Senior Jeremy Williams won the 3,000m steeplechase in a time of 9:19.45.
Senior Zach Pawlowski qualified for the BIG EAST championships in the pole vault, tying for fourth after clearing 15-3.
Three members of the Marquette track & field team qualified for the outdoor meet in the discus. Senior Damian Anisko (155-10), junior Michael Boedeker (151-09) and junior Michael Heim (148-09) finished sixth, seventh and 10th in the event.
Friday, in the hammer throw, Anisko qualified for the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships with a toss of 173.04, finishing sixth.
At the Augustana College Opener in Rock Island, Ill., junior Tom Sage captured the decathlon, scoring 5,228 points.
Up next for the teams are the Mike Poehlein Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind., and Wisconsin Lutheran Invitational in Wauwatosa, Wis., Saturday, March 31.
