MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's tennis team won back-to-back matches Saturday as the Golden Eagles defeated Illinois State, 6-1, and Wis.-Green Bay, 7-0, at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium. The 7-0 sweep of Green Bay marks MU's fourth shutout of the season. The wins help Marquette improve to 9-10 on the spring season.
"These were definitely good wins for us today," said head coach Jody Bronson. "With everyone moving up in the lineup, we saw players who have struggled in their last couple matches shine today and help us get the wins."
Against Illinois State, Marquette swept the doubles matches en route to the first team point of the day. At no. 1 doubles, junior Shannon Brown and sophomore Robin Metzler took care of Parke-Badard and Miller, 8-2, while junior Erin Watkins and senior Francina Bonnelly clinched the point with an 8-3 win at no. 2. Junior Maria Calbeto and freshman Kylie Moore fought for their victory over Hrovatic and Zubkova, 8-7 and 10-5 in the tiebreaker.
In singles play, the Golden Eagles won the first three matches to take the team win from the Redbirds. Calbeto jumpstarted Marquette with a 6-3, 6-2 win at no. 3 singles. Brown and senior Dominika Dabrowski followed in suit with wins at no. 5 and 6 singles. Brown defeated Hrovatic, 6-2, 6-4 to notch her seventh straight individual win, while Dabrowski defeated Simovic, 6-3, 6-4.
Illinois State scored its lone point of the day at no. 4 singles when Carolyne Parent downed Metzler, 6-4, 7-5.
In the last singles matches of the morning, Moore pulled out a three-set victory over Katri Miller in her third appearance at no. 1 singles. Moore rallied after a 6-2 first-set loss to win, 7-5, 6-3 in the second and third sets.
Marquette picked up right where it left off and stormed out to secure the doubles' point against the Phoenix. In three doubles matches, the Golden Eagles only gave up five points.
The Golden Eagles cruised to their ninth win of the season by winning all six singles matches over the Phoenix. Calbeto started it off with a 6-2, 6-2 straight set win over Laura Bartingale at no. 3 singles. Moore and Strother followed with victories of their own at no. 1 and no. 4 singles, respectively to secure the win for the Golden Eagles. At no. 1 singles, Moore down Heather Harding, 6-1, 6-1, while Strother defeated Megan Gregory, 6-2, 6-0 at fourth singles position. With the win, Moore improves to 4-1 at top spot.
"These wins definitely give us confidence heading into BIG EAST play next week. We are focused on our destination and know what we have to do to get there."
The Golden Eagles will kick-off a three match BIG EAST tilt beginning March 31, against Seton Hall.
