SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Marquette women's tennis team improved to .500 in spring dual play Saturday afternoon by defeating BIG EAST Conference foe Seton Hall, 5-2. With the win, the Golden Eagles stand at 10-10 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
Marquette took an early 1-0 lead by winning two of three doubles matches. The no. 2 doubles tandem of junior Maria Calbeto and freshman Kylie Moore handled its Seton Hall counterpart, 8-1. Senior Francina Bonnelly and junior Erin Watkins were able to hold off Danielle Viola and Ebru Burduroglu, 8-6, at no. 3 singles to grab the first team point of the afternoon.
In singles play, the Golden Eagles were without Moore who suffered an injury during the doubles competition. Seton Hall's Amanda El-Tobgy won by injury default and helped the Pirates tie up the team score, 1-1, before singles play got underway.
However, the Golden Eagles won three straight matches at no. 4, 5, and 6 singles to secure the win. Sophomore Robin Metzler jump-started Marquette with a 6-1, 6-1 straight set win over Viola at no. 5 singles. Junior Shannon Brown followed taking down Iva Gyurgina, 6-4, 6-2, at the no. 6 position. Calbeto gave Marquette the win thanks to her 7-5, 6-2 decision over Sylvia Jaros at no. 4 singles.
The Golden Eagles final win of the afternoon came at the top singles spot when sophomore Lauren Little rallied after losing her first set to defeat Burduroglu, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.
"It wasn't our best performance today, but we knew the importance of getting this win," said head coach Jody Bronson. "We had to step up because of losing Kylie. We played with a lot of heart today and hope we can use this for tomorrow."
Marquette will return to action Sunday when it takes on Rutgers at 10 a.m.
