Golden Eagles Down Rutgers, 5-2, in BIG EAST Play

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Marquette women's tennis team ended the weekend on a high note defeating Rutgers, 5-2, Sunday afternoon at the Busch Campus Tennis Bubble. With the win, the Golden Eagles improve to 11-10 overall and 4-1 in BIG EAST play. The 11 wins are the most since the 1999-2000 season.

"I am very proud of our team," said head coach Jody Bronson. "When you start the season 1-8, and now are 11-10, it just shows that this team can fight and pull it together. They are working hard and believe they can win. Even with all of the line up changes, they keep pulling through. We have four matches before the conference tournament and we will see what we can do and where we can go."

The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the match by winning the doubles point. The no. 3 doubles duo of junior Erin Watkins and senior Francina Bonnelly dismantled Lauren Edelschein and Christine Tran, 8-1. Junior Shannon Brown and sophomore Robin Metzler followed with a 8-3 win over Anela Dujsic and Caitlin Brown, to give Marquette the first team point of the day.

In singles play, the Golden Eagles put away the win thanks to victories at the no. 2-5 positions. Watkins, in her second appearance at no. 2 singles this season, took down Dujsic, 6-1, 7-5. Calbeto took a 6-2 straight set victory at the third spot from Katherine Arlak.

Brown won her 10th straight match of the season and defeated Edelschein, 6-4, 6-2, at no. 5 singles. Wrapping the match up for the Golden Eagles was Metzler who downed Caitlin Baker, 6-4, 6-2, at no. 4 singles.

Marquette will spend the Easter weekend holiday in Florida when it plays at Stetson on Saturday, April 7, and then at Central Florida on Sunday, April 8.
