SUGAR GROVE, Ill. - Marquette sophomore Mike Van Sickle shot a three-under 69, in the second round at the NCAA Central Regional in Sugar Grove, Ill., at Rich Harvest Farms Golf Club.
Van Sickle, who shot a three-over in the first round, left the course in 13th place following the conclusion of his round and moved up to 11th by the end of the day. Through two of three rounds, he carded a three-over, 147.
After waiting out a one-hour delay due to frost for the second round start, Van Sickle came out strong, recording a birdie on the second hole. He also birdied the ninth hole to start the day two under. On the back nine, he went bogey-par-bogey on the first three holes, but settled to birdie no. 14 and no. 16 to finish the round at three under. The biggest point in his round came on the birdie on no. 14, a hole he double bogeyed in round one.
As a result of his low score -- one of 10 scores below 70 -- Van Sickle moved up 32 spots in the standings. He needs to be one of the top two individuals on teams not qualifying for the NCAA Championships to advance.
Heading into the final round, three golfers from teams in non-qualfying positions and one individual were ahead of Van Sickle in the standings. Western Illinois golfer Tim Streng was in third place at even par. The Leathernecks are in 17th place as a team. Wisconsin's Dan Woltman tied Steng for third place at even. The Badgers are tied for 11th.
Andrew Landry of Arkansas was in fifth place at one-over par. Like Van Sickle, Landry is competing as an individual. Matt Carvell of Southeastern Louisiana is in eighth place at two-over. His team is in 14th place heading into the final round. ?Lamar's Dawie Van Der Walt leads the tournament at four under, 140. Tulsa leads the team event at nine over, 585.
The third and final round play will begin just after 7 a.m. on Saturday, May 19. Van Sickle tees off from the 10th hole in the 11th group at 8:53 a.m. with Arkansas's Landry and Xavier's Jason Kokrak.
