MILWAUKEE - Sophomore Mike Van Sickle was selected to play in the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships and will compete in the Central Regional tournament at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill. The tournament will be held May 17-19.
Van Sickle won three individual tournaments this season -- the first three of the spring semester -- and was the champion or runner up in five of six spring events. He heads into the post-season ranked 38th by GolfStat.
"This is very well deserved," head coach Tim Grogan said. "He played exceptionally well in the spring and worked hard on his short game -- especially putting -- and that work paid off."
Van Sickle is the first Marquette golfer to be selected to play in the NCAA Tournament.
"He'll always be the first. That's huge for him and the Marquette golf program," Grogan said. "That sets an example to the rest of the team that we should be able to get to the NCAAs as a team. That will be a clear cut goal for next year."
He led the team in scoring this season, setting a school record with a 71.61 scoring average. He is the school's all-time leading scorer at 72.69.
The Rich Harvest Farms course will be no stranger to Van Sickle. Marquette opened up the fall season with an event on the course. Van Sickle finished 10th, shooting a 10-over, 226, for the 54-hole event.
The NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship Tournament will be held May 30-June 2 at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va.
